The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team’s quest for a seventh consecutive championship double starts in Austria as the F1 season gets off the line at the Red Bull Ring more than three months after its expected start.
A dominant 2019 season saw the Mercedes team capture the constructors’ and drivers’ titles for a record-setting sixth straight time with 15 wins and nine 1-2 finishes between Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, but a new challenge awaits in 2020.
The season was set to begin in March in Australia but was postponed because of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Now, more than 100 days later, the Mercedes team will kick off its title defense with a doubleheader in Austria, the beginning of an updated schedule that currently has eight confirmed races over the next 10 weeks with more races expected to be announced soon.
Hamilton, who captured the drivers’ crown last season for his fifth title in six years, and Bottas each have one victory and two poles at the Red Bull Ring. The pair came in fifth and third, respectively, in last year’s Austrian Grand Prix.
