In the midst of three races over three weekends, MotoGP arrives in Australia for Round 17 of the season with Maverick Viñales looking to once again climb to the top step of the podium at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
Viñales has reached the rostrum five times total at the track, highlighted by a pair of third-place finishes in 2016 and 2017 before last season’s impressive victory.
Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s more veteran rider, Valentino Rossi, has tallied plenty of podium finishes Down Under and will be looking to add to his success in what will be his 400th Grand Prix start. Rossi won five in a row from 2001 through 2005 at Phillip Island before adding another victory in 2014 and has recorded four runner-up finishes and five third-place results in his time in the premier class.
Maverick Viñales: “Overall, we had a positive race weekend in Japan, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough to be on the podium. Now we are in Australia. I really like the Phillip Island track. I have many great memories of that circuit, and one of them is last year‘s race, when I won the Australian GP, which is very motivating. The team was working very hard, so we’ll try to be strong again this year and once more fight at the front.”
Valentino Rossi: “In the last few races we have not been fast enough, but we are working hard. We headed to Australia for the race at the Phillip Island circuit, a track that I like a lot, and I hope I can have a good race. We have to work hard to be competitive right away. We will do our best!”
