Charlotte native William Byron secured his fourth front-row start in seven races by becoming the youngest driver to capture the pole for the 600-mile race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“I grew up in Charlotte, so I came to this race every year,” the 21-year-old said. “It’s a dream come true to qualify on the pole. Thanks to Hendrick Motorsports just across the street over there, all the hard work there and everybody at Chevrolet for giving us fast race cars. … Can’t think of a better way to start the weekend.”
Earlier this season, Byron earned the first pole of his career when he became the second-youngest driver to lead the field at the Daytona 500.
Hendrick Motorsports has tallied five total poles in 2019, the most in the Cup Series. For the Coca-Cola 600, Byron’s Hendrick teammates will start 12th (Chase Elliott), 13th (Alex Bowman) and 15th (Jimmie Johnson).
