Alex Bowman captured his second straight runner-up finish and William Byron crossed the line eighth for his second top-10 result of the year in the Gander RV 400 at Dover International Speedway.
Bowman, who started the race at the rear of the field, carried his momentum from Talladega to the “Monster Mile,” matching his best career Cup Series finish. The No. 88’s best result this season prior to Talladega was a pair of 11th-place finishes.
After starting on the outside pole, Byron led the field for five laps before scoring his second-best result of the year as Hendrick Motorsports finished with three drivers in the top 8.
“It may not have seemed like it but this was a tough race for us today,” Byron said. “We started up front and ran within the top seven or eight positions, collecting stage points. I had to start at the back there with the 22 after Stage 1 and it really took us all the way until about 50 laps to go to get back into the top 10. It was tough but the car was really fast and I’m super proud of the guys for that. We made a lot of progress and good adjustments throughout the race. It was just a grinding race that was hard to pass, but I was able to move to the top and make some moves. I’m proud of this Axalta team. It’s definitely a step in the right direction for us.”
Martin Truex Jr. took the victory for his second win of the season and his third career triumph at Dover.
